In this column, I will review the CPT codes that we continue to use most frequently as voice professionals, the newly required nonpayable functional outcomes G-codes for 2013, and the proposed procedure code for evaluation of voice and resonance that we hope to see in 2014. In the previous Dollars $$ Sense column published in November 2012, I spoke of the changing landscape in health care and hinted at how it may affect speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Reimbursement for our services will be based on functional outcomes, not the number of services provided or the number of minutes a therapist provides. I asked you to think about “quality not quantity” and “value not volume” and to consider how the strategies we use make a measureable and positive functional difference in the recipient's life. The new CPT coding procedures reflect this paradigm shift in health care.
