Please keep in mind that exciting changes will be taking place next year after July 1, 2009 and new regulations and policies will be in place for SLPs in private practice. On July 16, 2008, Congress passed the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) that included a provision for SLPs in private practice to obtain a Medicare provider number so that we may directly bill Medicare for our services. This is a major achievement for ASHA and an accomplishment that has been long in the making. This change in our provider status does not take place until July 1, 2009. This allows time for ASHA to work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop and implement regulations and policies pertaining to our future status as Medicare providers.
