Voice and resonance disorders have received new and revised ICD-9-CM codes that became effective October 1, 2009. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention coordinates and maintains the disease and disorder codes for the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification. For the first time, coding for disorders of phonation and disorders of resonance are differentiated. These may seem like baby steps considering the difficulties we all face when coding for the different manifestations of “dysphonia,” but they are steps forward. As we consider future improvements for coding, please keep in mind that all proposed changes are to be supported by peer-reviewed and published research evidence.
