Some important coding changes relative to fluency and cognitive disorders became effective October 1, 2010. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention coordinates and maintains the disease and disorder codes for the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Although this publication is dedicated to voice and resonance disorders, many of us provide evaluation and management for a variety of communication disorders; therefore, I’m including the new coding information in this Q & A column. For more information on these new ICD-9 codes, you may go to http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/icd/icd9cm_addenda_guidelines.htm.
