Our first issue of the 1997 Division 3, Voice and Voice Disorders, newsletter brings a warm welcome to two new Steering Committee members: Douglas M. Hicks, of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, and Stephen C. McFarlane, of the University of Reno School of Medicine in Nevada. Doug and Steve have already provided contributions to the Division 3 leadership during meetings at ASHA’s Seattle Convention and other volunteer tasks. They both have strong interests in continuing education and are planning Division 3-sponsored presentations for ASHA’s 1997 Convention. Glad to have you with us Doug and Steve!
Other good news for all special interest divisions arrived following a Legislative Council decision (LC 9-96) at the Seattle Convention. Soon, we will be able to accept affiliations from associate members of ASHA, including students, international members, related professionals, consumers, and others. This change rectifies an unforeseen oversight that precluded division affiliation by individuals who are not eligible for membership in ASHA as a speech-language pathologist, audiologist, or speech-language-hearing scientist. Guidelines for these new associate affiliations likely will be determined at the Board of Division Coordinators’ (BDC) meeting in March. Please advise students, colleagues, and others who have an active interest in voice and voice disorders that affiliation with Division 3 will be available soon.
