As promised, I want to devote this column to updating you on a rather remarkable experience at the May 1999 ASHA-sponsored “Forum on Interdisciplinary Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders.” I attended as Division 3’s representative. The conference is part of ASHA’s exciting initiative to reconnect with scientists and our research roots.
Prior to this experience, I have never had the privilege of being present at or part of the birth of a new organization. Now please hold judgment before you dismiss this out of hand as folly, foolishness, and excess. I certainly don’t covet more organizations to be part of and certainly did not anticipate that outcome upon my arrival to Chicago. However, the serious commitment by an impressive list of both organizations and individuals through a true working weekend brings initial credibility to the undertaking.
