The respiratory system is the essential interface for exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the external environment and the blood. The environmental gases are brought to the gas exchange surface of the alveoli in the lung by ventilation. Ventilation is a function of the tidal volume (Vt) and breathing frequency (f). The Vt and f are produced by respiratory pump muscles. The activation of these muscles is the result of brain neural drive activating spinal motor neurons that innervate the respiratory muscles. Normal breathing pattern is determined by the brainstem respiratory rhythm generator, which is a network of neurons. Ventilatory activity shares common organs and neural mechanisms with other respiratory-related functions like vocalization. The vocalization requires a delicate and complex control of respiratory pattern, thus integration is essential between these neural control mechanisms. This review will discuss the basic motor and neuronal mechanisms controlling breathing and the relationship of respiratory neural control with vocalization.
