The characters are very familiar to musical theater audiences: Annie, Oliver, Winthrop, Cosette, Gavroche, the seven VonTrapp children (Gretel through Leisel), and Amahl of the night visitors. I teach children who play these roles. The names are household ones: Shirley Temple, Michael Jackson, Donny Osmond, Charlotte Church, and Britney Spears. I teach children who sing their songs and who try to achieve their success.
I am a teacher of singing with a large private studio. Two thirds of my over 100 students are under the age of 18. They represent but the tip of a very substantial iceberg of young singers who wish to study seriously the art of singing. Add to that the many children who wish to sing better for amateur performance or for purely personal reasons and the iceberg swells significantly. Yet, despite this huddled mass of singers yearning to be taught, there exists among, it seems, a majority of voice care providers, the opinion that children should not study privately until after puberty.
