Speech-language pathologists who evaluate and treat children with voice disorders are likely to be seeing a significant increase of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and extraesophageal reflux (EER) disease as a component to the voice problem. Heightened awareness about the interactions of GER/EER and voice function is essential. These children are best evaluated and managed through a team approach with pediatric trained otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists (Arvedson & Brodsky, 2002). This review will provide background information about GER/EER and the implications on laryngeal status, evaluation, and treatment for children with these problems.
Reflux laryngitis is common in adults and children, probably only one of several laryngeal manifestations associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and extraesophageal reflux disease (EERD).
